Our schedule of speakers was rearranged to allow us to start the year a talk on this very "hot" issue.

Things are not what they seem! Here's what CBC radio said about the Temporary Foreign Worker program.

"We didn't used to do this. When we needed hired hands to break the soil on the prairies, sawmill workers in BC, factory workers in Ontario - we took immigrants. They came for life. Not any more. When it comes to sweat work, Canada will give you two years and then send you back where you came from. They call this being a guest worker. "

And if things go badly for the "guest" worker, he can't quit or go to work anywhere else.

Mr. Sereda, in his talk on the Temporary Worker Program, will describe the plight of workers from Ukraine that are working right here in Alberta.

Do not miss this very important meeting at 6pm on Thursday January 31, 2007 at the Danish Canadian Club.

Seee the Upcoming Events page for details.

Dinner Meeting

Thursday January 31, 2008

CRASH OR BOOM? WHAT’S IN STORE IN 2008 AND HOW TO PROFIT WHATEVER THE OUTCOME

Unless the bulk of your portfolio was invested in China or other emerging economies, or in commodities including gold, chances are 2007 was, at best, a rather non-descript year for you. The bad news is that 2008 is likely to be a lot worse.

The U.S. economy is under severe strain, some would say on the verge of financial collapse. The sub-prime mortgage debacle has led to the bankruptcy of hundreds of lending institutions and has begun to shake to their very core even the giants of the U.S. banking industry (including Merrill Lynch, Bear Sterns, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs). The U.S. housing market is mired in its worst depression in 20 years. Housing prices continue to fall, foreclosures are up hundreds of percent, homebuilders are being devastated, and hundreds of billions of dollars in “home equity” have disappeared from the balance sheets of American consumers. And with no “home ATM” to draw upon, the days of unbridled consumer spending are coming to an unhappy end. The U.S. auto industry – once synonymous with American industrial hegemony -- is in ruins as all three of the “Big Three” are de facto insolvent and on the verge of bankruptcy. U.S. dependence on foreign oil to power its economy and on foreign capital to finance its trade deficits is at unprecedented levels. The value of the U.S. dollar has plummeted against major (and minor) currencies around the globe. The U.S Federal Reserve and the central banks of several other major western industrial economies collectively injected well over half a trillion dollars of liquidity into the world’s financial system in December 2007 alone! Interest rates have also been cut in Britain, the U.S. and Canada in an attempt to stave off recessionary forces notwithstanding the fact that the real annualized inflation rate exceeds 10% in each of these countries.

The question then, is whether western central banks can prop up (much less artificially reignite) their faltering economies or whether market forces will overwhelm these efforts and dramatically re-value asset prices to levels not seen in a decade or more as “excesses” are wrung from the system.

In other words, will world markets crash in 2008?

And if so, what can you do to safeguard your assets, not to mention profit from the opportunities that present themselves when everyone else is running for cover?

Whatever your views on how markets will fare in 2008, some strategies will prove superior to others in terms of protecting your wealth and affording you the best opportunities for gain.

Don’t miss your chance to hear Bohdan Romaniuk address a number of these strategies at our next monthly members’ meeting. Bohdan will present his annual market forecast to UCPBA members and will provide invaluable insights and ideas on how to protect your portfolio and profit from the market turbulence anticipated in 2008.

So please mark Thursday, January 31 in your calendars. The meeting will be held at the Danish Canadian Club and will start at 6 pm. A Q&A session will follow Bohdan’s presentation.

See the Upcoming Events page for details.

During the month of November we commemorate the Holodomor - the man-made famine that killed upto 10 million people in Ukraine in 1932/33.
